K-Pop Group SuperM Reveals Debut Record, Tour
K-pop is welcoming a new group to the industry this month.
The new “super-group,” dubbed SuperM, consists of members from K-pop acts like SHINee, EXO, and NCT 127. They’ve announced a debut tour to support their first “mini-album.” The 10-date North American ‘We Are The Future’ outing will kick-off on November 11 in Fort Worth, followed by gigs in Atlanta, San Diego, San Jose, and Seattle. They’ll stop at Chicago’s United Center, New York City’s Madison Square Garden, and The Forum in Los Angeles before wrapping-up at Vancouver’s Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena on February 6.
The 1st Mini Album SuperM dropped on Friday, but the group already announced tour dates. This is unusual for any act to announce a debut tour before a recording is even released, let alone play bigger arenas. However, each of the members have achieved success in their respective groups; SuperM includes Taeminl from SHINee, Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, NCT 127’s Taeyong and Mark, and Ten and Lucas from the Chinese-based group WayV.
While the members of SuperM have sold more than 14 million records between their own groups, as well as an estimated fan group of seven million people, they will still be competing against K-pop’s top acts BTS and BLACKPINK. In just a short amount of time, both groups have broken records with BTS becoming the first K-pop band to play a stadium in the U.S. and BLACKPINK holding the title of the first K-pop girl group to play Coachella.
“This is a total new formation of a group and artist, and also a totally new form for the business,” Chris Lee of SM Entertainment told Forbes earlier this year of SuperM. “We’re maintaining their (previous) groups, their solo careers, and on top of this we have this ‘Avengers’ group to pull them together.
“We want to create a synergy between their groups, them as solo acts, and the SuperM group to create a big wave in this K-Pop industry.”
Will SuperM be able to de-throne the K-pop stars of BTS and BLACKPINK? Their upcoming tour will be telling.
