The Carolina Hurricanes’ many attempts to host an outdoor NHL game are now finally paying off. The team announced Saturday that it will host the 2021 NHL Stadium Series, making them the first Southeastern team to hold an outdoor game.

NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium will host the February 20, 2021 battle between the Canes and an opponent to be named at a later date.

“We’re proud to be the first NHL market in the Southeast to host an outdoor game,” said Hurricanes owner and CEO Tom Dundon said in a statement. “We’re going to do everything we can to make as many seats available as possible, because we know how high demand will be for this game, and the epic tailgate that will accompany it.”

Ticket prices and information are forthcoming. However, Hurricanes season ticket holders are guaranteed early access to the event’s pre-sale.

The Hurricanes have made appeals to host the NHL Stadium Series several times in the last decade but have had to jump through plenty of logistical hoops that comes with funding the outdoor spectacle. They have not only never hosted an outdoor game, but have never been invited to play in one either. Only five other teams hold that distinction: Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights.

Carter-Finley Stadium, located on the campus of NC State, will become the sixth college football venue to host an outdoor NHL game. It will soon join the ranks of Notre Dame Stadium, TCF Bank Stadium, Michigan Stadium, Falcon Stadium and Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Officials have pointed to Carter-Finley Stadium’s pristine sight-lines as a factor in hosting the game.

“The NHL has said this might be the best stadium they’ve ever played in,” Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell said in a release. “We don’t think there’s a bad seat. That’s a very exciting thing to have a close environment where it will be more fun for our fans.”

The latest edition of the NHL Stadium Series took place this weekend and saw the Los Angeles King top host Colorado Avalanche 3-1 at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs.
