A performance of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill Broadway musical was cancelled over the weekend after pepper spray accidentally went off during the show.

The matinee performance was taking place on Saturday at the Broadhurst Theater when pepper play was deployed during the second act of the musical, causing a crowd to stand up and start coughing. Audience members were evacuated from the theater on 44th street and two people received minor injuries as a result of the spray. The injured theatergoers reportedly refused medical attention, the New York City Fire Department said.

Originally, the show was set to resume but was ultimately cancelled. Those who were at the scene shared their experience on Twitter:

After the New York Police Department arrived at the theater, they determined “no criminal elements” of the scene, and the theater was cleared of the pepper spray before the second showing of the play later that night. Those who had their show interrupted received information about exchanging their tickets or receiving a refund for a future showing, a press representative told Broadway News.

Jagged Little Pill, a musical based on Morissette’s 1995 record of the same name, debuted on Broadway this past fall. The musical became the first Broadway show to bundle the cast album with a Broadway ticket, offering a digital copy with each ticket sold through December 31, 2019. The cast album, which dropped in November, features 23 songs from the musical’s original Broadway cast.
